Hello and welcome.

My name is Ugur Tuna. I am a data scientist living in Cambridge with my family. I created this page to share a little bit about who I am as a person and the work I have done in my career.

My Story

I moved to the United Kingdom in 2010. Since then I have made this country my home. I have a simple philosophy that guides my life. I believe in a World Nation. I believe that we are all connected by our shared humanity regardless of where we come from or what language we speak. This belief shapes how I treat people and how I approach my work.

I am a father of four children. Being a father is the most important role I will ever have. It teaches me patience and kindness every single day. When I am not working I love to work with my hands. I am an avid DIY enthusiast. There is a unique honesty in fixing things. You repair a broken shelf or build a table and you can see the result immediately. It is a simple and honest joy.

I also have a deep love for football. On the pitch I play as a Number 10. I have always admired Zinedine Zidane. I try to play with that same spirit. I look for the space that others might miss. I try to set up my teammates so they can score. I think this is very similar to how I work in my professional life. I try to help the team succeed.

I also enjoy cinema. I appreciate films that make you think about the human condition. I love having conversations about life and philosophy. I think it is important to understand each other.

My Professional Journey

My career has been a journey of solving problems. I started in marketing but I soon realized that I loved data. I saw that data could tell us the truth about how the world works.

Currently I work as a Data Scientist at the University of Cambridge in the Department of Haematology. I am very proud of the work we do here. We use technology to help doctors understand patient notes. We built a system that reads text and organizes it automatically. This saves weeks of manual work for researchers. It means they can spend more time finding cures and less time reading paperwork. I also help manage data for the Gut Reaction hub which is a large study helping patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

Before joining Cambridge I worked as a Forecasting Analyst. I helped retail companies predict what products they would sell. This was important work because it reduced waste. We used data to make sure companies did not order too much stock. I also worked on a project to digitize invoices. This helped save paper and made processes much faster.

I have always enjoyed learning. I have a Master of Science in Data Science from Loughborough University. I also studied at King's College London and Durham University. I enjoy coding in Python and R. I like building systems that are reliable and useful.

But more than the technology I value the people I work with. I believe in being a good colleague. I believe in mentoring junior team members and helping them grow. I believe that if we work together with kindness and respect we can build great things.

Thank you for reading my story.
